Summary Below are described two bank buildings of the Volksbank Dortmund being located in Unna and in Schwerte (NRW). The building in Schwerte was built in 1998 and already at that time equipped with EIB / KNX. The building in Unna was built in 2002 and LON was used as building control system. Due to increased energy costs, failure of older devices, complicated operation, non availabe energy management, insufficient forwarding of fault signals and due to the fact that further technical systems for decentralized control should be realized we had got the mandate to develop and to implement a building overlapping system. The focus should be put on the integration of the already existing cabling, a highly increased energy efficiency and a simple operation interface for the user.
Main technical highlights KNX as higher level control system with redundant power supplies, buffered for up to 8 hours by rechargeable batteries. Even if the building management system fails all safety relevant function still are operating. The central building control system, which serves as information panel for service and maintenance personal due to its freely designable user interface, consists of several GIRA facility servers. To the central system for heating, air condition and ventilation, controlled by a DESIGO system, further system components have been added. Connection to KNX via BACnet KNX Gateways.
Benefits of KNX Elements thereof were lighting control, shading, alarm and status messages of the fire alarm system, energy and peak load management, shading and light guidance systems, integration of cameras, optimization and control of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems with concealed heating and cooling ceilings in combination with an adjacent ice storage, integration of a new emergency lighting system in connection with LED lights for floors and cashpoint areas specifically designed for the project and partially equipped with emergency lighting functions.
Which functions were realised with KNX Building control system, GIRA facility server. M-Bus current transformers connected to KNX by ABB DoGate. Connection of heating, air condition, ventilation to KNX by Siemens BACnet gateways. Peak load control by Siemens switch actuators. Connection of fire alarm and emergency lighting system via ABB I/O modules. Alarm and fault reporting per mail, SMS, and PopUp (DoGate and facility server). Integration of emergency lighting into the energy reduction (CEAG). Connection of some cameras for access control purposes (Bosch). Connection of previously installed LON Devices via ABB DoGate. Shading management.
Lighting Energy savings and CO2 reduction by the use of new LED lighting fixtures. In case of ABB actuators attention has been paid to the possibility to measure the switched electrical power of each output channel. This functionality is used for the analysis of loads, switching cycles and thresholds as well as for sending safety relevant activation signals for escape ways with connection to the emergency lighting system. The emergency lighting replaces – if required – the normal lighting out of business hours.
Shutter control The lighting of the counter area is realized by projectors and several reflection mirrors providing a homogenous illumination of that area. In addition glare is avoided. For cleaning and maintenance the mirrors – mounted at a height of 17m – can be moved down electrically. In order to avoid false alarms of the fire alarm system during this action the monitoring “Fireracer” is switched off. Shading management via BACnet / KNX gateway to Siemens control.
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning Parts of the central systems for heating, air condition and ventilation – controlled by the DESIGO system - have been replaced and extended by system components of Siemens. Partially also old Siemens room controllers have been integrated into the system. Siemens BACnet / KNX gateways based on IP perform the connection to KNX. In that are implemented lighting control, shading control and temperature dependent messages as well as functions of the offices and functional rooms.
Household Appliances Out of business hours the socket outlets of the coffee machines are switched off for security reasons, but can be released by event scenes.
Alarm Systems The fire alarm system transmits status and fault messages via I/O modules to the KNX system. Because the old emergency lighting system did not work properly any more a new CEAG CB-S system has been installed. For that reason the old emergency lighting fixtures of the technical areas, which were controlled by current monitoring, have been replaced by new energy efficient self-contained emergency lighting units with monitored LED spots. KNX I/O modules in connection with CEAG DLS modules enable the usage of the emergency lighting as corridor lighting during peak-off times and thus help to reduce drastically the energy demand of the lighting.

Energy Management The electrical power is measured by ABB transformer-rated counters and evaluated by ABB DoGate. Depending on peak power and consumption the energy management is realized in connection with the GIRA Facility Server and the SIEMENS DESIGO system.
